What Causes Rhabdomyolysis?

In the years since rhabdomyolysis has been discovered, different researchers have discovered different causes for rhabdomyolysis. Although in most of the cases that have developed, the cause of the development of the condition remains unknown and the factors that contributed to the person’s case of rhabdomyolysis may never be discovered. Researchers continue to compile as much information about the condition as they can because there is a better chance of defeating a medical condition when there is a great deal of information and studies to refer to pertaining that particular condition.

There have been many things linked to the development of rhabdomyolysis in patients of all ages and stages of health. One common contributor to the development of the condition is physical injury, where a severe trauma has occurred to the affected muscle either by heavy debris falling on the muscle or having the muscle crushed in a car accident or a machinery accident. When a person’s case of rhabdomyolysis has developed due to a muscle injury, then the condition is typically limited to the muscle had been injured and does not spread to other areas of the body.

Another type of physical ailment that can lead to the development of rhabdomyolysis is the restriction of blood to a certain area of the body. If the muscle of the body does not receive an adequate amount of blood for a long period of time, then the muscle will become starved and damaged which allows rhabdomyolysis to develop in the affected area. If the blood flow is being restricted by a blood clot, then there are a number of other medical issues that will need to be addressed as well to improve the person’s overall health and prevent complications from occurring.

In recent years, certain medications have been associated with the development of rhabdomyolysis in particular patients. One of these medications, Baycol, had such a strong link between taking the medication and the development of rhabdomyolysis that the US Food and Drug Administration recommended that the medication be removed from the market because the risks of taking the medication were higher than the benefits that would be gained by the people that were taking the medication for medical ailments. People that had taken Baycol were found to have increased their risk of developing rhabdomyolysis by as much as ten times over people that had chosen other medications that lower cholesterol.

When a medication is found to be the cause of the development of rhabdomyolysis, the damage of the condition is not limited to a particular muscle or a particular set of muscles that have become damaged. People that develop a case of rhabdomyolysis because of a medication can find that virtually any muscle in the body can be affected by the condition. As the condition progresses, more and more muscles are damaged by the disorder, flooding the blood with the byproducts of the broken down muscles and causing the kidneys to work overtime to eliminate the toxins from the body. Over time, the kidneys will start to fail from overworking and the patient may experience life-threatening renal failure if they do not get medical treatment for the condition in a timely manner.
