Treating Cases Of Rhabdomyolysis

Because rhabdomyolysis is considered to be such a devastating condition, it is very important that the people that develop the condition be diagnosed quickly and treated immediately to reduce the damage that can be caused by the condition. The initial symptoms of the condition are generally mild and are often overlooked by the person or the person attempts to medicate themselves to reduce the effects of the symptoms that appear. This results in many of the cases of rhabdomyolysis that appear not being diagnosed until it has reached a more aggressive form of the condition and the person is uncomfortable enough that they decide to seek medical treatment.

Rhabdomyolysis breaks down the muscle tissues in the body and eliminates the broken down components as waste products from the kidneys. The condition is typically diagnosed as the result of a blood test that checks for specific chemical components in the blood that indicate the development of rhabdomyolysis and a urinalysis that confirms the result of the blood test. As soon as the results from the tests have been confirmed, the person will generally begin treatment for the condition by using any one of a number of different treatment methods.

The treatment methods that have been formulated to treat rhabdomyolysis are intended to correct the condition and to reverse the effects of the condition on the body. The initial treatment method used is typically fluid therapy to remove the waste products created by rhabdomyolysis from the blood. This treatment method is used so that the kidneys do not become overworked trying to eliminate these waste products from the body and so the blood will move faster through the body to eliminate the waste products more quickly.

If the patient is experiencing impaired kidney function, then medications may be used along with the fluid therapy to improve the function of the patient’s kidneys. In many cases, a medication will be given to increase the amount of urine produced by the body so that the toxic components in the blood can be eliminated more quickly. To prevent the build up of the toxic materials in the kidneys, another medication may be used to make the urine produced by the body more acidic which will inhibit the build up of materials in the kidneys.

Some cases of rhabdomyolysis will require the rebalance of the electrolytes present in the body. By adding these electrolytes to the saline solution that is being used for the fluid therapy, the doctor can solve two issues at once by quickening the elimination of the waste products in the body and quickly replenishing the nutrients and minerals that the body needs to perform properly. An imbalance of electrolytes in the body can cause a number of different unpleasant symptoms such as confusion, nausea, vomiting, abnormal heart beat and rhythm, and even a coma if left untreated for long enough. Renal replacement therapy may also be needed if the amount of waste products in the blood causes the kidneys to shut down and stop processing the components out of the blood. Prompt treatment is the key to preserving the health of the patient and reversing the effects of rhabdomyolysis.
