Kugel Hernia Patch Lawsuit

Kugel Hernia Patch LawsuitAlmost 50 models of the Bard Composix Kugel Mesh hernia patch, manufactured by Davol, Inc. and its parent company, C.R. Bard have been recalled by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

The Kugel Mesh hernia patches were recalled after the FDA began receiving reports of breakage of the memory recoil ring. Ring breakage is a serious and sometimes life-threatening side effect of the defective Kugel patches, which can lead to bowel obstruction, bowel perforation, chronic enteric fistulas (abnormal connections between the intestines) and other injuries (see: Kugel Hernia Patch Injuries below).

Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch Injuries

A failure of the Bard Composix Kugel Mesh hernia patch, and the other products that fall within the scope of the Kugel Mesh patch litigation, can cause a wide variety of injuries. For products that include the memory recoil ring, which is a hard, plastic ring that runs around the edges of the Kugel hernia patch, a breakage of the ring can cause any of the following:

  • perforation of the intestines
  • migration of the ring through the abdominal wall
  • perforation of the skin by the ring so that the ring is visible to the patient

Failure of any of the Bard/ Davol hernia products included in the litigation can cause injuries such as:

  • migration of the product away from where it was implanted;
  • the formation of fistulae, defined as abnormal connections or passageways between organs or vessels that normally do not connect;
  • the formation of abscesses, defined as collections of pus surrounded by inflamed tissue;
  • bowel obstructions, which may require bowel resection to repair; and/or
  • sepsis.

What are the symptoms of a defective Kugel Mesh patch?

Symptoms a patient could expect to experience with these injuries include abdominal tenderness, fever, nausea, abnormal bowel movements, diarrhea, and abdominal distention. A patient with an implanted hernia patch who experiences these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
