The Composix® Kugel® Mesh Hernia Patch, manufactured by Bard/Davol, has been linked to a number of serious side effects including the following: bowel perforation, bowel obstruction, chronic intestinal fistula, and serious infection.
What is a Composix® Kugel® Mesh Hernia Patch?
The Composix® Kugel Mesh Patch is used to repair hernias- a protrusion of a tissue, structure, or part of an organ through the muscular tissue or the membrane by which it is normally contained. The hernia repair mesh is placed behind the hernia defect through a small incision. The patch is then held open by a “memory recoil ring” that allows the patch to be folded for insertion and later spring open and lay flat once it is in place. Unfortunately, the “memory recoil ring” can break under the stress of placement causing bowel perforation, bowel obstruction, chronic intestinal fistulas, serious infections, abdominal pain, fever, tenderness, and sometimes death.
